Today I found one of my students with his head in the toilet...

  • Me: _______, no!
  • Student: *calmly lifts his head out of the toilet* Can you help me button my pants?
  • Me: Okay...did you taste the water in the toilet?
  • Student: No.
  • Me: Then why was your head in there?
  • Student: I was watching it flush.
  • Me: ...

Interviewing a student for his end-of-year conference...

  • Me: What is your favorite work in the classroom?
  • Student: Checkers is my favorite work because I like for me to win and Cristina to lose.

Yesterday our school was buzzing with excitement over the arrival of the space shuttle Enterprise. I mostly kept thinking about this Enterprise and smiling to myself.
I didn’t get to see the shuttle making it’s way to New York, but another group of students were up on our rooftop playground, and they did! One of my lovely coworkers snapped this shot of the kids. It made the New York Times website today! First picture on the page! So fantastic.

One of my 12 year old students played and sang Radiohead’s Creep all the way through yesterday. Perfectly. Con brio. And I didn’t teach it to him. I simply told him he might like the song.

Listening, I thought “my work is done here”.

That’s how I feel whenever my preschoolers take out/complete work, without asking for help. I stand back and watch them work. When the classroom is quiet (a productive kind of quiet) and everything is peaceful, I know we’re doing something right.

A student of mine made this. It’s me! ♥ (96/366)

This is what we had for dinner last night. So amazing! I love when we have family visiting. (97/366)

Early intervention and sustained individual support for every student are keys to educating the whole child in Finnish schools (via Finland’s Formula for School Success (Education Everywhere Series) | Edutopia)

If you’re only using words to communicate as a teacher, why show up? Why not just type your notes? Teaching is a full-body performance. The moonwalk was all the rage in 1983, and the students loved it. It made the material work for them.

Spent a wonderful evening with my coworkers and parents (of students) at an auction in NYC. A lot of money was raised to provide financial aid for students whose parents may not be able to afford the tuition. I missed out on the auction last year, but I’m so glad I was able to go. I love the people that I work with and I’m so pleased to be a part of my school.

This was me before the auction. The earrings were a gift from my favorite cousin. I had my hair down for the rest of the night. I think I looked pretty darn good. Maybe it was the wine.
